Restorative Inlays & Onlays

Restorative Inlays and Onlays Torrance, CA

Restorative inlays and onlays are a great option to replace missing parts of teeth lost due to decay or damage. They are the “in-between” option that helps dentists treat deep cavities without the use of more costly implants or crowns.

At Dentist of Torrance, we examine your teeth carefully to determine if we can use this treatment of inlays and onlays to restore your oral health whenever possible.

What Are Restorative Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are a type of indirect filling or restoration. They’re made outside the mouth as a single solid piece and fit perfectly into the size and shape of deeper cavities or breaks in the teeth that the piece will be protecting.

What are Dental Inlays?

Inlays were formally used instead of dental fillings. Now, they are used in the place of composite and amalgam fillings for deeper cavities and breaks only.

At Dentist of Torrance, we make the inlays from tooth-colored materials (ceramic, porcelain or dental composite) and securely bond them to your tooth to improve the strength of your teeth. They are sealed into the tooth for a healthy, natural-looking solution that’s less invasive than a dental crown.

What are Dental Onlays?

Dental onlays fit inside the tooth but reach onto the chewing surface of back teeth to replace the cusps that have been damaged. These onlays used to be made of gold, but now they’re made of natural-looking tooth-colored materials for a more uniform look and feel.

Like inlays, onlays bond to the tooth and improve the strength of teeth and your overall oral health.

Who Needs Inlays and Onlays?

There are many times when inlays and onlays will be recommended by your dentist instead of crowns or fillings, including:

  • When teeth are weak and require extensive restoration
  • When teeth have their integrity breached and require strengthening
  • When direct restoration in the form of fillings may prove challenging due to the position of the tooth
  • For larger, deeper cavities are present that dental fillings won’t treat thoroughly enough
  • When teeth are weakened and need protection, but don’t need to have enamel removed
  • To restore cusps lost after root canal treatment
  • To provide minimal contouring of remaining coronal tooth tissue

What are the Benefits of Dental Onlays and Inlays?

Inlays and onlays provide many benefits for patients.

  • They’re durable and last for many years when properly cared for
  • They treat tooth decay effectively while preserving tooth structure
  • They work when fillings won’t
  • They strengthen teeth
  • They are a natural-looking solution
  • They don’t expand as much as amalgams, so they don’t weaken or fracture teeth
  • They can be placed during a single procedure
  • They’re easy to care for
  • They prevent the need for more aggressive treatments in many cases
  • They help eliminate tooth loss
  • They help eliminate tooth sensitivity

What Can I Expect When I Have Inlays or Onlays Placed?

When you’re ready for your inlays or onlays to be placed, we’ll welcome you into the office here at Dentist of Torrance and help ensure your comfort during your visit.

As we begin the procedure, your tooth will be numbed with topical local anesthetic and the tooth decay will be removed with air abrasion to prevent infection or worsening conditions for your teeth. This also prepares the tooth for placement of the inlays or onlays.

We will then make an impression of your tooth and make a model that will be used to create the inlays and onlays, using tooth-colored materials.

A temporary filling will be attached to your tooth before you leave, to protect the affected teeth until the inlays or onlays are molded and cured and ready for application.

When the pieces are ready, you’ll return to the office for bonding and hardening of the inlays and onlays with specialized lighting.
